On March 1st, at 7 pm, a unique artistic experience titled "A Small Exhibition for Daydreaming" is set to captivate the imaginations of art enthusiasts at Garage Kamba, a pop-up gallery in the heart of Zagreb. Curated by Sara Mikelic, this solo exhibition presents the work of Darko Aleksovski, an artist who delves into the fluid boundaries between dreams and memories through his self-published series of zines, "Mali prirucnik za maštanje" ( ).
The exhibition is divided into three interconnected segments. It features twelve previous editions of Aleksovski's zine, which serve as an exploration of a constantly changing worldview. These zines are visual and narrative journeys into places, objects, and situations where imagination intertwines with memories, inviting readers to embark on a journey beyond the mundane.
A new edition of the zine, created in collaboration with Stela Mikulin and Željko Beljan, will also be on display, highlighting the collaborative aspect of Aleksovski's artistic practice. This segment demonstrates the boundless creativity that emerges when different artists converge to create a unified piece of work.
Furthermore, visitors will have the chance to see outputs from a participatory zine workshop held on February 28th at the gallery space. This hands-on activity is a testament to Aleksovski's commitment to fostering community engagement and collective art-making.
Aleksovski's project is rooted in utopian concepts like "landscapes of astonishment," a term coined by Jose Esteban Munoz to describe a way to "overcome the limitations of an alienating present [which] enables the envisioning of a different time and place." Another key idea is "agoraphilia," introduced by Paul B. Preciado as a love passion sparked by the city, where the material boundaries between urban streets and the body blur to the extent that "the map becomes anatomy."
The exhibition also celebrates the artist's invitation to other creatives to contribute visual or written material for specific zine editions. Previous collaborators include artists Ivana Spiroska, Simona Manceva, and Jan Demir, who featured in the fourth, fifth, and eleventh issues, respectively.
Supported financially by the City Office for Culture, Inter-City and International Cooperation, and Civil Society of Zagreb, "A Small Exhibition for Daydreaming" is produced by the "Natural-Artistic Circle," with backing from the "Kultura Nova" Foundation, the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia, and the City of Zagreb. The exhibition's refreshments are sponsored by the Medvedgrad Brewery.
This solo show not only promises to be a creative haven for visitors to explore the depths of their imagination but also stands as a shining example of the vibrant collaborative art scene in Zagreb. Don't miss the opportunity to step into a world where dreams are woven into the fabric of the real, at Garage Kamba, where "A Small Exhibition for Daydreaming" will open doors to the public, offering an enchanting escape from everyday life.
