This Wednesday, December 4th, at 8:00 PM, join us at Javna Soba in Skopje for the highly anticipated launch of Rumena Bužarovska’s debut novel, Toni. Published by Tri Publishing Center, this novel marks a significant new chapter in the acclaimed writer’s career.
Known for her sharp, witty, and piercing short stories, Bužarovska now turns her attention to a longer form, creating a work that promises to be as thought-provoking as it is entertaining. In Toni, she delivers a brutally comedic yet profoundly tragic exploration of masculinity, tradition, and modern life.
“Toni is a novel about a man, a city, and a legacy. It’s a story that strikes a delicate balance between laughter and sorrow. This is a novel that will knock you off your feet, forcing you to question the social, romantic, and familial dynamics of our everyday lives,” say representatives from Tri Publishing Center.
The story follows Toni, a middle-aged former rocker from Skopje, who lives with his mother and works at a government institution. His seemingly carefree life takes a turn during the pandemic when a series of unintended events—rooted in his own decisions—forever changes his life and the lives of those around him. Clinging stubbornly to his distorted idea of personal freedom, Toni sinks deeper into his illusions and the weight of his own apathy, all while navigating the wreckage of his fading reputation.
Rumena Bužarovska, a writer celebrated for her raw, unfiltered voice and razor-sharp humor, brings the same energy and insight to Toni, crafting a novel that is at once contemporary and timeless. “Written in her signature bitter yet humorous tone, the book is a testament to Bužarovska’s ability to capture the absurdities and heartbreaks of modern life,” adds Tri.
The event will feature a conversation between Bužarovska, writer Petar Andonovski, and poet/editor Kali Dimitrova, offering insights into the creative process and the complexities of the novel’s unforgettable protagonist.
Admission is free. Don’t miss the chance to experience an evening of literature, humor, and reflection as one of Macedonia’s finest contemporary authors unveils her first novel.
