„...power for the people: use your body... use your voice... make a choice...“
Skopje's vibrant cultural scene receives a spirited boost with the arrival of "Radical Cheerleading," a unique performance choreographed by the innovative Zufit Simon. This daring event is scheduled to take place on May 21st, at 20:00, at the Youth Cultural Centre, as part of the acclaimed PERFORMANCE PLATFORM FESTIVAL.
Admission to this electrifying 70-minute show is free, although potential attendees are encouraged to reserve their seats early by emailing lokomotivaskopje2015@gmail.com due to limited seating. The performance is tailored for an audience over the age of 16, reflecting its mature and reflective thematic elements.
"Radical Cheerleading" is not your typical cheerleading spectacle. Originally conceived by queer feminist activists in the 1990s, this form of expression combines elements of non-violent protest and performance art, turning the traditional cheerleading framework on its head to stage impactful, theatrical demonstrations in public spaces. The performance is particularly relevant in today's sociopolitical climate, offering a joyful yet satirical alternative to more militant forms of protest.
Under the artistic guidance of Zufit Simon — a celebrated choreographer and performer known for her thought-provoking works — the show promises to blend glamour and glitter with potent messages and slogans. Simon, alongside dancers Dorota Michalak, Erika Leo/Sophie Prins, Sunayana Shetty, and Cary Shiu, explores the vital question: "What is worth taking to the streets for?"
The production has already gained noteworthy acclaim, having been highlighted in the nomination statement for the "DER FAUST" German Theater Award 2023 in the Dance Production category. It praises Simon’s ability to create impactful imagery and convey deep messages with humor and precision.
Contributions to the performance’s atmosphere and depth are made by sound artist Fredrik Olofsson and lighting designer JOM, with costumes by Mirella Oestreicher. The expert team, led by production manager Dietrich Oberlander and PR head Beate Zeller, assure an immersive experience for the audience.
"Radical Cheerleading" is supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of North Macedonia and the Goethe-Institut from Skopje, underscoring its cultural significance. It is also part of a larger collaboration with festivals Antistatic from Sofia and Kondenz from Belgrade, showcasing a strong regional synergy in the Balkans' performing arts scene.
