Tomorrow, on Thursday, March 7th, an exciting event will take place at the MC Gallery in New York. It's the promotion of the book "Participatory Art: Paradigmatic Shift from Objects to Subjects" by Macedonian theorist Suzana Milevska. This book, published by Kontrapunkt - Skopje as part of the "Punctum" series, promises to be a groundbreaking addition to the discourse on participatory art.
The event will commence with introductory remarks by Iskra Geshoska, a cultural theorist, and publisher. Following this, a conversation will unfold between the author, Suzana Milevska, a visual culture theorist and curator from Skopje, and Zhivka Valjavicharska, an associate professor at Pratt Institute in New York. Tijana Ana Spasovska, an art historian, will also provide insights, with the entire discussion moderated by Artan Sadiku, a cultural and political theorist. The event will conclude with an open session for questions and answers.
This promotion is part of the КRIK - Festival for Critical Culture platform, highlighting the importance of critical discourse in today's artistic landscape.
Moreover, following the promotion, an exhibition curated by Suzana Milevska featuring the works of Tadej Pogacar will be unveiled, enriching the audience's experience even further.
The book, "Participatory Art: Paradigmatic Shift from Objects to Subjects," is a compilation of fifteen essays on participatory art, focusing on artistic practices in Southeastern and Central Europe. Suzana Milevska has spent over fifteen years crafting these insightful pieces, offering a comprehensive examination of the subject. This publication marks the first time these essays are compiled together, providing readers with a cohesive narrative that traces the evolution of participatory art.
Translated and edited by Ana Dimishkovska, a dean and professor at the Institute of Philosophy, University "St. Cyril and Methodius" in Skopje, the book is a testament to Milevska's dedication to advancing critical discourse in the field of art.
Suzana Milevska, a respected theorist and curator in the field of visual arts and culture, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this project. Her contributions to postcolonial criticism, gender differences in visual culture, and feminist, participatory, and collaborative artistic practices have earned her international acclaim.
This book launch is part of the "Peripheral Visions – towards a trans(l)national publishing culture" project, aimed at fostering international exchange and collaboration among small cultural and linguistic contexts on the peripheries of Europe. Supported financially by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of North Macedonia and the Creative Europe program of the European Commission, this initiative seeks to create a vibrant international space for experimentation and innovation in publishing.
