MKC doesn't forget: 60 years anniversary of the Skopje earthquake in the Macedonian Youth Center

Skopje, the capital city of North Macedonia, boasts a vibrant history, rich culture, and deep-rooted traditions. However, it is not an exaggeration to say that Skopje has also faced its fair share of challenges. On July 26, 1963, a devastating earthquake struck the city, leaving behind widespread destruction and claiming the lives of over 1000 people. This fateful day remains etched in the memory of all Skopje residents and the global community, as the world mobilized to extend support and aid in the city's rebuilding process.

In the wake of this catastrophic event, the Macedonian Cultural Center (MKC) was established as an institution dedicated to promoting art, culture, and education in Skopje. This year, MKC Skopje is commemorating the 60th anniversary of the earthquake with a diverse program that pays tribute to the past while looking towards the future.

Once again, MKC Skopje is at the forefront of honoring this significant milestone in the city's history. As an institution that holds a deep connection to one of Skopje's most significant and heart-wrenching moments, they have organized a special program to mark the 60th anniversary of the earthquake.

The musical part of the program will kick off at 9:00 PM in MKC Park, where attendees will be treated to performances by talented Macedonian artists like Pedro Horisonte, Luftanza, and Baklava. These soulful performances will be accompanied by the album launch of "For Skopje with Love".

At midnight, MKC Park will transform into a mesmerizing outdoor cinema, where a film titled "Skopje Remix [2012]" will be projected. This film, a sequel to the 1964 hit, depicts a modern Skopje, rebuilt and founded on love and solidarity.

All the events are free of charge, and the simple message is to spend this day in the embrace of music and cultural experiences, paying homage to the events that brought the city to its knees but eventually brought forth qualities and attributes that perhaps Skopje wasn't fully aware of, thanks to global and Yugoslavian solidarity.

Please note that the provided program is not exhaustive, as further announcements are expected in the lead-up to the event. MKC Skopje invites all to come together and partake in the celebrations that honor Skopje's resilience and indomitable spirit. Join us in MKC Park as we remember the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to a brighter future for Skopje.
